Freight planned for the lowest emissions
ADMIRAL · Horizon Europe, 20 partners
A European research project to send freight by the route that pollutes the least — for example part of the way by train instead of truck. We built the part that finds those routes.

In short
- For
- Companies that ship goods across Europe and want lower emissions
- The problem
- Freight is usually sent by the cheapest or fastest route, not the cleanest.
- What it does
- A freight marketplace that suggests the lowest-emission route, as long as it is on time and on budget.

Who it is for
For companies that ship goods across Europe and want lower emissions
The problems it solves
Freight is usually sent by the cheapest or fastest route, not the cleanest.
Emissions are only counted afterwards, when nothing can be changed.
Freight marketplaces compare price and time, not emissions.
- Freight forwarders and shippers
- Companies moving goods by truck, train and ship
- Projects cutting emissions in freight transport
How it works
How the system chooses the cleanest route
When a company needs to move goods, there are many ways to do it: truck, train, ship, or a mix. The system compares them and proposes the one with the lowest emissions that still arrives on time and within budget.
Start from the shipment
What has to go where, by when, and for how much.
Compare every way to get there
Road, rail and water, and combinations of them.
Pick the cleanest option that still works
Lowest emissions, while keeping to the deadline and the price.
Tested in four pilots
Partners tried it on real shipments in four pilots across Europe.
What changed
Before and after
Freight was routed for cost and speed; emissions were only reported afterwards.
A freight marketplace that suggests the lowest-emission route, as long as it is on time and on budget.
